\nThe city was besieged by Tarentum with the help of Sparta’s king Archidamus, who lost his life under the walls in 338 BC. Later, the city was taken by Hannibal in 212 BC and then conquered by the consul Quintus Fabius Maximus in 209 BC, who sacked Manduria and took 3,000 prisoners. <\/p>\n
The highlight of the visit will be the Plinian Spring, a spring of water hidden inside a cave about 18 meters in diameter.
\nPliny the Elder described this place in his work Naturalis Historia, having visited it or been told about it by others.
\nWe will access the cave via a flight of steps, where we can admire the large skylight at the top of the vault.
\nExternally, at the skylight, there is a representation of the city’s civic coat of arms, an almond tree inside a well. <\/p>\n
