Beginning of the visit

My guided tours in Matera will take you on a discovery of a thousand-year-old city, embroidered by stone and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and European Capital of Culture 2019.

Vittorio Veneto Square and Sasso Barisano

We will start our route from Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where we will admire from the first vantage point the famous Sassi, the ancient quarters of Matera.
From here, we will skirt the Sasso Barisano, exploring the historic streets that will lead us to the city’s most beautiful squares, such as Piazza del Sedile.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Bruna and Civic Coat of Arms

We will reach the Cathedral of the Madonna della Bruna, from whose vantage point we will be able to admire the castle of Matera.
During the visit, I will tell you about the birth of the civic coat of arms and the history related to the castle.

Sasso Caveoso and Casa Grotta

The visit will continue with a descent to the Sasso Caveoso, a well-known film set also used by actor and director Mel Gibson for the film “The Passion of the Christ.”
Here, we will make a must stop at the Casa Grotta, where Matera families lived until the 1960s.
This visit will give you an authentic experience of daily life in the Sassi.

Gravina and the Archaeological Park of the Murgia Materana

We will end the visit with a further overlook of the Gravina and the Archaeological Park of the Murgia Materana, famous for its rock churches.
This vantage point will give you a breathtaking view of Matera’s unique landscape.
