Description
Guided tour Cisternino, the Borgo Fiorito

Beginning of the visit

My guided tours of Cisternino will take you to discover a jewel in the Itria Valley, located 400 meters above sea level.
Cisternino is a village awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club for its beauty and preservation.

Old Town and Mother Church

We will begin the guided tour from Porta Piccola, in Mazzini Square.
As we enter the historic center, I will show you the cobblestone streets and white houses dotted with pots of colorful flowers.
The village has kept its oriental charm intact with its low houses, hidden courtyards, small stairways, intricate alleys and small arches.
Our first stop will be the Mother Church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, built in the 14th century.
Inside the church, we will admire an extremely valuable work sculpted by Stefano da Putignano.

Spontaneous Architecture and Historic Districts

We will stroll through the historic center, admiring the spontaneous architecture that characterizes the village’s five main neighborhoods.
Surrounding the central square, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, are the four districts: Bère Vecchie, Scheledd, U’ Pantène, and L’Isule.
Each district has its own history and peculiarities, and I will take you on a journey through the centuries.

Historical Monuments

During the visit, we will admire some of Cisternino’s most important monuments, including:

  • Palazzo Amati: An elegant example of historic architecture.
  • Clock Tower: A symbol of the city that marks time.
  • Norman Swabian Tower: From which stands the statue of St. Nicholas Patara, protector of the city.

Local gastronomy

Cisternino is famous for its cured meats and meat cooked in the typical “fornelli,” taverns where meat bombette, rolls, and chops threaded on a spit and cooked vertically are cooked.
These delicacies represent the gastronomic pride of the entire Itria Valley, and Cisternino is proclaimed its capital.
During the visit, I will tell you about these culinary traditions and recommend the best places to enjoy them.
