Beginning of the visit

My guided tours of the Metapontum Archaeological Museum and Park will take you on a discovery of one of the most significant archaeological areas in Basilicata, located near the Ionian coast.
The National Archaeological Museum of Metapontum displays the main artifacts found in the territory of ancient Metapontum, as well as those from the nearby areas of Pisticci and the archaeological area of Incoronata.

We will begin our visit to the Museum, where we will explore the four main sections:

1. Prehistoric Artifacts: We will admire artifacts that testify to human presence in the region since prehistoric times.
2. Greek Colonization: We will discover Mycenaean artifacts and vessels, many of which depict scenes from the Iliad and Odyssey, as well as coins and vases depicting Greek gods.
3. Integration of Greeks and Indigenous People: We will analyze artifacts that illustrate the encounter and integration of Greek and local cultures.
4. Roman Age: We will conclude with artifacts from the Roman era, marking the last phase of the colony’s development.

Archaeological Park of Metapontum

After exploring the museum, we will move on to the Metapontum Archaeological Park, which includes:

1. Urban Sanctuary: We will visit the remains of the sanctuary, a central place of worship for the inhabitants of ancient Metapontum.
2. Agora: We will walk through the agora, the heart of public and political life in the colony.
3. Craft Quarter: We will admire the traces of the craft quarter, where many of the artifacts we saw in the museum were produced.
4. Monuments and Historical Traces: We will discover various monuments and structures that marked the civil and religious life of the colony from its founding to the Roman conquest.
