Beginning of the visit

Vittorio Veneto Square and Sasso Barisano

We will start our route from Piazza Vittorio Veneto, more precisely from the Luigi Guerricchio balcony, to admire the Sasso Barisano, the ancient quarter of Matera.
This first stop will give us a breathtaking panoramic view and a first introduction to the city’s history.

Church of St. John the Baptist and Seat Square

We will continue our visit to the Church of San Giovanni Battista, an extraordinary example of medieval architecture.
We will then walk to Piazza del Sedile, one of the most beautiful squares in Matera, where we can appreciate the unique atmosphere of this historic place.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Bruna

We will visit the interior of the Cathedral of the Madonna della Bruna, located in a dominant position over the city.
Here we will discuss the birth of the civic coat of arms and the history associated with the castle of Matera, offering an in-depth look at the city’s cultural and religious heritage.

Sasso Caveoso and Casa Grotta

The visit will continue with a descent to the Sasso Caveoso, a famous movie set used by actor and director Mel Gibson for the film “The Passion of the Christ.”
Here, we will make a must stop at the Casa Grotta, where Matera families lived until the 1960s.
This place offers an authentic experience of daily life in the Sassi.

Rock Church and Gravina

We will continue with a visit to a rock church, where we will admire the architecture and interior decorations, evidence of religious devotion and rock art.
We will end the visit with a further panoramic view of the Gravina and the Archaeological Park of the Murgia Materana, famous for its rock churches and unique landscapes.
